Some of the most important companies in the Spanish nuclear sector have presented and signed a joint declaration advocating for the long-term operation of nuclear power plants in Spain. Signed by EAG (Empresarios Agrupados-GHESA), Framatome, GDES, GE Vernova, IDOM, and Westinghouse, this document highlights the positive impacts of the nuclear sector on industrial competitiveness and societal well-being, and calls for a review of the Spanish energy policy.
Revisiting the gradual closure of power plants and extending their operational lifespan.
The declaration calls for a dialogue and a renegotiation of the 2019 agreement on the gradual closure of nuclear power plants, taking into account the significant changes that have occurred in the industrial, geopolitical, social, and economic contexts since then.
He highlights the negative consequences of the announced closure of nuclear power plants - notably the Almaraz plant, scheduled to close in 2027 - on the economy and competitiveness of the affected regions, emphasizing that the nuclear industry generates nearly 20,000 stable and highly skilled jobs.
In this document, the signing companies also request a review of the Spanish energy policy, urging the competent authorities to integrate measures ensuring the continuity of nuclear energy in the National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan. They advocate for the extension of the lifespan of nuclear power plants as a sustainable solution, in line with the recommendations of the International Energy Agency and the European Commission.
The statement emphasizes that the modern and safe Spanish nuclear power plants are capable of operating for many more years, up to 60 or even 80 years, and that an early closure would result in high environmental and economic costs, affecting the Spanish people and causing the loss of thousands of jobs in the industry and related sectors.
The signatory companies reaffirm their commitment to the safety, sustainability, and development of the nuclear industry in Spain, advocating for a rational energy strategy that ensures the future of the nuclear sector as an essential element of a robust energy mix in the country.
